PROGRESSION
Referees will progress along the following general pathway although some of the steps may be skipped based on competence and previous experience:

Trainee --> Flippaball referee --> water polo club referee --> graded referee

The pathway to become a flippaball refereee is :

1. Attend initial training session, sign the code of conduct and pass a basic test
2. Observe and then shadow a flippaball referee for a session
3. Co-referee some flippaball games with a referee.
4. Referee a few flippaball games being shadowed by an experienced referee
5. Be successfully assessed to referee flippaball games.

The pathway to become a water polo club refereee is :

1. Complete at least 1 term of flipaball refereeing
2. Attend initial training and pass the basic test
3. Referee a few water polo games under supervision
4. Be successfully assessed to referee water polo games

The pathway to grading is determined by NZWP but is similar to the processes described above.
